Oh yeah, for many reasons PP was a vital component, and when he was gone, they were changed forever. And yet somehow I think Bob couldn't have been replaced without there being a profound change in the whole "group dynamic" (but of course, pure speculation as you note...they did pull if off, at least to most of us, in replacing the kybd player repeatedly...?).

I agree - the chemistry (in more ways than one) between Jerry, Bob, Phil & Bill & Mickey is a huge reason they became the band they were. Besides without Bob how would they do Sailor > Saint or Looks Like Rain???? They would have been doomed without Bob in the 80's!!

;~)

LOL... funny but my point exactly... did we need saint sailor? Would could we have gotten better tunes in the 80's? As Jerry was declining the other members became more important, where they able to step up? Most of Jerry's songs where great, this goes back to the major stress he felt as unelected "leader"....had other members been able to step up higher maybe Jerry could have taken it easy and lasted longer...maybe

maybe he took it way too easy in other areas is the real reason he didn't last longer?

I'd love to hear Cartman do LLR; you know, like he does "sail away"?! Great opportunity...
